how to copy my data from one computer (10.6.8) to another (10.8.4)

Hello,

I have an old iMac running OS X 10.6.8 and bought recently a Mac Book Pro running OS X 10.8.4. As my iMac is running too slow and getting old, I want to copy all its data, programs and files to my new Mac Book Pro. However, I am worried with compatibilities... How to do it? Is it possible just to move folders from one computer to the other? Or? Surely must be a way to copy all my data from the old system to the new system...

Help please...

Check with their developers for the system requirements. Existing versions may need updating.

or shall I just delete the whole new system (OS X 10.8.4) from the new Mac Book Pro and install all from the old machine, including the old system (10.6.8)?

I would expect 10.8.4 to be a much better system but if there is the risk of my applications and files not working, rather prefer to use the old OS X...
