Apple stores and other stores also sell gift cards.

As to a phone number, the iTunes Store has no phone support. You can buy iTunes gift cards by phone by calling the Apple Store. If you want to send the gift electronically, you need to purchase through iTunes per the instructions to which King Penguin linked.
