Don't want to write on my photos. I need to add metadata. Taking pictures of documents in an archive. I need to attach manuscript numbers, author info, dates, etc., to photos. But I don't want to affect the image.

You're going to have to look for a 3rd party app thats allow to your edit photo metadata. There is no native way to do this on the iPad.

Was afraid of that. Anyone want to recommend an app that will do this?
(I expect that iPhoto will allow for this once I sync my iPad with my office computer. But I'm visiting archives on the road. Need to be able to record metadata with the iPad, independently of a grown-up computer.)
Have you thought about iPhoto for your iPad? I'm not sure it has the tools you need, but it warrants your consideration just in case you overlooked it.
Ah. Didn't realize there was a separate iPhoto for iPad. Description in the store says t allows user to "apply a descriptive tag", which sounds sufficient for my needs. Happy to get any other app suggestions that might do this one thing well.
As a conclusion, in case anyone is interested, I went with Photogene. Does much more than I need—but the important thing is that it allows for direct IPTC editing, which allows me to attach authors, titles, source archives, manuscript numbers, dates, keywords, copyright info, etc., etc., etc., to images.
