My son's ipod will not hold a charge. It only lasts two or three minutes then dies. When he puts it on the charger it takes maybe 10 minutes to show it's fully charged...but only lasts a few minutes then dies. He can only use it if it's plugged in. Can we get a replacement battery? Or is there anything else we can do?

First, inorder to make sure it's a software/hardware failure connect the device to iTunes and restore. All the data will be lost, so backup before proceeding.

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one with a new battery for $79. They do not fix yours.
A third-party place like the following will replace the battery for less. Google for more.
