I stupidly/accidentally deleted QT Pro. Thought I'd download QT7 and go "pro" (kept key/reg) Install fails - "a newer version exists". But I can't find it anywhere! Help!!!

I'm running mac OSX 10.6.8. Was trying to make "space" and accidentally deleted QuickTime Pro. I thought I'd just download the free QuickTime 7 and go "pro" (I wrote down and kept key/reg). But the quicktime 7 (and the quicktime Pro) Installations fail - "Apple ProRes QuickTime decoder can't be installed on this disk. You already have a newer version of this software installed". But I can't find quicktime anywhere on my hard drive! Sigh. I'm not a techie - I tried to find the answer on various sights ... there was something about an .msi file but I must have deleted it to because I can't find it either! I can play .mov on my computer (the "kind" column in Finder says "QuickTime Movie"), but I can't find the QuickTime player - even when I use Finder to do a search. Any ideas? Thanks for any help!

It only took me four MORE hours, but I finally decided to check System Preferences updates folder to see when the latest update was. with that info in hand, I went into quicktime.com to see when their releases were, figured out which version of quicktime I had, and reinstalled it. YAY! It SEEMS to be working (hopeful seems to be the right attitude -it's almost midnight!) If there is anyone else out there dumb enough to do what I did - hope this helps!

Didn't work. The Quicktime player works now, but I can't get into my PRO - even though the registration key shows as being there! It seems that the problem is my (old) QT Pro has 4 5digit numbers, and the new Pro requires 5 5-digit numbers! So, I'd have to buy a new QT Pro. Does anyone have an idea on how I can SAFELY delete QT 7.7 on OSX 10.6.8? Do I need to reinstall OSX?

Didn't work.

What version did you install? Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion all use a special version of the QT 7 media player that is compatible with the dual 64-/32-bit QT structure embedded within these operating systems—i.e., the system will not normally allow you to install other player versions but Apple's protective measures can be overridden using third-party apps like Pacifist. In addition, Snow Leopard used at least two versions—one prior to OS X v10.6.3 and the other for OS X v10.6.3 and later. Is THIS the version your installed?

It seems that the problem is my (old) QT Pro has 4 5digit numbers, and the new Pro requires 5 5-digit numbers!

Mac QT 7 Pro keys contain alpha-numeric characters arranged as five sets of four characters each separated by dashes—not four sets of five characters each.

(E.g., XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX)

You cannot "safely deleted the QT 7 structurfe embedded in the operating system. You can delete and re-install the QT 7 player app as you would any other standalone app since it is just a GUI for interaction with the embedded QT structure. QT X, GarageBand, iTuenes, iMovie, FCE, Preview, MPEG Streamclip, etc. all behave in a similar manner for the playback, encoding, and/or conversion of QT content. Re-installing OS X is usually the last resort when you know or suspect that the operating system or any of its major conponents (such as the QT embedded structure) has been corrupted.

I have snowleopard OSX 10.6.8 and installed QuickTime Player 7 Ver 7.6.6

I can't delete it OR get my QuickTime 7.3.1 PRO to load over it.

You said "Apple's protective measures can be overridden using third-party apps like Pacifist" - can you please tell me where to get a safe copy and walk me through it (in idiot-simple language)? I really am not a computer person! Thank you. 🙂

I have snowleopard OSX 10.6.8 and installed QuickTime Player 7 Ver 7.6.6

QT 7 v7.6.6 (1709) is the correct player build for Mac OS X v10.6.3 and later.

I can't delete it OR get my QuickTime 7.3.1 PRO to load over it.

Why would you want to delete this player? It is the only version of the QT 7 player that is compatible with your current Mac OS X v10.6.8 operating system. THE QT 7 PLAYER v7.3.1 IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR CURRENT OPERATING SYSTEM AND THE QT FRAMEWORK EMBBEDED WITHIN IT. "Pro" versions of QT 7 are not separate versions of the QT player—simply the regular QT 7 for which access to editing routines has been unlocked by the entering of the "Pro" key purchased from Apple. If you do not need layer/composite editing features, you could just as easily install the free MPEG Streamclip app which does nor require a key to access editing features.

The link to the QT 7 player v7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 and later was included in my previous response but it appears you have already installed this build. Installing any other version of the QT 7 player would not be compatible with the QT 7.6.6 (1793) framework which is embedded in the Mac OS 10.6.8 operating system. Attempting to remove or replace the embedded framework will corrupt your operating system. The installer is scripted specifically to prevent you from installing a QT 7 player app that is incompatible with the current operating system and version of the QT embedded structure. I repeat, the QT routines cannot be deleted or replaced as could be done under much older operating systems because they are now an integral part of the operating system.

Since you indicated the QT 7 player currently works but you have no access to "Pro" options, my recommendation would be for you to enter the "Pro" key correctly. As noted in my previous response, this key should be in the form of 20 alpha-numeric characters arranged in 5 groups of 4 characters (XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) and not 4 groups of 5 characters or 5 groups of 5 characters. Further, the name under which you purchased the "Pro" key must also be entered correctly to include any prefix (Mr., Dr., Prof., etc.) or suffix (Jr., Sr., MD, DDS, etc.) used on your account at the time of purchase. This name was used to generate the "Pro" key and, as such, must be correctly included to unlock the editing features. On the other hand, the "Organaization:" entry is not significant and anything or nothing can be entered as you see fit. I am also assuming here, that the original key was purchased for a Mac OS since Windows OS keys are not interchangeable with those for a Mac.

Hi Jon, thank you. I had tried changing the way i entered the key but must have made a mistake, so i tried again and it worked. BUT.... I found both QuickTime X and QuickTime 7.6.6 on my computer. (Apparently 7.6.6 is an optional install for snow leopard). Do you know of any way to make 7.6.6 the primary qt and X the optional? Because 7.6.6 is MUCH better than X (in my opinion and for my needs). Thank you for any help on this.

(Apparently 7.6.6 is an optional install for snow leopard).

It is an optional install for all systems v10.6.3 and above including Lion and Mountain Lion systems—especially if the users want to access QT 7 "Pro" features.

Do you know of any way to make 7.6.6 the primary qt and X the optional?

I used the content adaptive menu to reset various video file classes as desired. E.g., I left M4V file defaulted to iTunes, MP4, AVI, and MOV were reset to the QT 7 player, MKV to VLC, MPEG and MPG were left defaulted to QT X player and VOB was reset for MPEG Streamclip playback.
