Reset Mac Preview program to beginning "factory reset"

Hello everyone,

I have a huge problem with Mac preview in combination with a Network Attached Storage NAS system. Everytime my NAS is offline or I'm not at home and I start Mac preview it crashes totally. Reason for this is that the Preview program tries to look for something (not sure what it is) on the NAS ... but the file is not online .... and sadly then preview crashes.

I'm quiet sure that I just have to bring the preview program back to its default setting. There must be some folder that I have to delete (and these are then automatically renewed on next start of preview) and then everything will work fine again (it worked fine for more than one year with the NAS already)

I really need help on this topic.

Thanks for helpful answers guys.

Best Regards,

Open your user/Library folder by holding down the Option key and selecting "Library" from the Go menu in Finder.

Open the Containers folder and delete the com.apple.preview folder.

Thank you SO much! My preview kept trying to open previous files and would crash. After several forums, I tried deleting the preferences files, opening in a preview app saved on a thumb drive, and even using the program Pacifist to reinstall the Preview App. Your suggestion to delete the com.apple.preview folder in the containers folder did the trick. It now works again!

Reinstalling an App will not restore it to "factory settings." It is already at "factory settings" because an app doesn't store its settings in the app. They are stored separately, usually in the user/Library, but can be in the /Library. Newer apps have a "container" which isolates the app from others. Otherwise, your Preferences folder (in your Library) may store the settings, or they might be in /Library/Preferences.
