Technically it is possible, but Apple make it frustratingly difficult to do. Its not like the earlier 27" and 24" machines (or the thunderbolt display for that matter) where you can lean the leg forward and fit a VESA mount to the internal hinge.

On the 27" 2012 and later machines, you need to purchase 3 parts. The replacement hinge, the replacement tongue (that attaches the hinge to the external VESA plate) and the VESA plate. All can be purchased from an AASP, but they are not cheap.

Technically, Apple sell the rear housing units as different service spares, because the hinges are different. But the only difference is the hinge mechanism. But this is what you'll need to complete the job. (this job requires the complete disassembly of the iMac, including removing the logic board, so is only recommended to be done by a trained engineer)

27" VESA Mounting Bracket (2012, 2013, 2014 and Mid 2015 compatible)

part number 923-0424

27" VESA Tongue (version 2012, 923-0423)(version 2013, 923-0531)(version 2014 and Mid 2015, 923-00084)

27" VESA Backing Plate/Hinge Mechanism (2012, 2013, 2014 and Mid 2015 compatible)

Part number 923-0422

You'll also need to replace the tape kit when refitting the LCD panel, and will need a handle and blade to remove the LCD before the job starts.

The tape kit goes by many part numbers, because they are sold in complete kits by AASP providers, but there are 2 versions, one for the 21.5" and one for the 27". Some of the part numbers are as follows (076-1416, 076-1419, 946-4547, 946-4548, 946-4549, 946-4551, 946-4550, 946-4552)

I hope this helps. I dont recommend this job for the majority of users, as the parts alone will cost over £100, and its a very lengthy process. But i would recommend having a trained engineer do the work. But saying that, it is physically possible, despite Apple making it difficult. (just so no one can say the only option is to sell your machine and purchase a VESA configured one)

Hi, doesn't sound hopeful...

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012) and iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) computers can be configured to order with a built-in VESA mount adapter when ordering via the Apple Online Store. The iMac with built-in VESA mount adapter lets you attach your iMac to a VESA-compliant mounting solution, such as an articulating arm or wall mount (sold separately).

Additional Information

VESA mount adapter upgrade kits are not available for iMacs with a stand. When an iMac is ordered with the built-in VESA mount adapter, the stand on the iMac is replaced with a VESA mount adapter and the iMac cannot be used with the standard iMac stand.

No idea if you could adapt one of these...
