Can the wireless security setting WPA2 be used with OS 10.6.8? Do I need to contact Verizon Fios to change this setting on my home router?

    Yes

As far as I know, when you got your FiOS router, you also received instructions on accessing the admin interface via your web browser.  I'm sure you can google the FiOS route's make and model to get the default admin username and password.

Once you are connected to the FiOS router as its admin, you can change the WiFi security to WPA2 and set a secure password that only you know.

When I had FiOS (previous home) they gave me an Actiontec router that had the admin account and password:

    admin

    password1

I also seem to recall that the Actiontec came with insecure WEP encryption and the hex WEP encryption key printed on the back of the device.

This is all from memory, as I do not have FiOS and the equipment anymore.  Google can be very helpful if you have questions.

I'm sure you could "Pay" Verizon to come to your house to reconfigure your FiOS router, but it is actually something you could do, or maybe you have a neighbor that you trust who has the ability.  Or you could figure it out, and then offer to make your neighbors with FiOS more secure :-)
