your computer restarted because of a problem - macbook pro 2010

Hello Everybody,

I been having a small issue with my 2010 macbook pro

The problem is i was using my macbook when suddenly it just restarted and displayed the message " your computer restarted because of a problem " not sure why this happened.

After the computer restarted and I logged in a Problem Report for OS X was displayed and contained this information below.

After it restarts I can carry on using it normally.

This has happened to me twice now, and I have no warrenty left so cant make a genius bar appointment.

Im on the latest mountain lion is this information help.

You might have a outdated at boot kext file since you just updated Mountian Lion.

Is a commnly used sound driver for many programs, you'll have to know which one installed using your Admin password and either update it or uninstall it.

If you can't or that's not the issue, try a #8 Reinstall Just OS X or other tests etc.

The particular model is notorious for GPU problems. The panic log is the typical log for when the GPU is failing. This has nothing to do with SoundFlower which is rarely if ever a cause of panics.

Please note what is listed in the dependencies.

Im near enough 100% sure my GPU isn't failing its since the 10.8.4 update this has been happening. I have alos been reasing some posts and its all since 10.8.4 update people have been experiencing this problem.

Then do this:

If you have your original installer DVD boot from it. Do you still get a panic? If not, then backup the computer, erase the drive, and reinstall Lion:

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Erase the hard drive:

1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.

2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the

left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on

the Security button and set the ZeroData option to one-pass. Click on

the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

Note, that if you cannot start from the Recovery HD without experiencing a panic, then you have a hardware failure.

Be aware that the panic report you posted is usually always associated with GPU failure for your specific model. It does not have anything specific to do with upgrading Lion or to Lion.

I think Kappy used the wrong canned paste.

This is what you do.

Shutdown and hold the Command R keys down and boot the machine, it will boot in RecoveryHD and then from there simply reinstall OS X with your AppleID etc.

No need to erase, and this will overwrite OS X with a new copy, then quit/reboot.

This has the effect of kicking out the Soundflower driver, make sure your Software Update is current.

SoundFlower will be removed out of OS X when you install OS X over itself, also it will fix any other issues in OS X if it is the cause.

Later on perhaps you'll find out one of your softwares will not work, then you check for updates that it's compatible with 10.8.4 and install it fresh again, this will put the Soundflower drive back into OS X.

Do not erase while in RecoveryHD, as all your files and programs will be gone. Your just going to install OS X only. 😉

Kappy might be right you might ALSO have a GPU problem, but your seeing if it's a software problem with Soundflower for now.

If the panic report appears again after this, then perhps it's time for a check at Apple. 🙂

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.

Hi thanks for the reply, this is what I have been stressing to explain. I have never ever got these kernel panics before its only since I updated to 10.8.4 about 4-5 days ago its happened twice. It's cant be just a coincident that it happens after I update to 10.8.4 and before that I have never experienced any problems.

It's not just me if you ask other people who are experiencing this they will also say its since they updated their machine to 10.8.4 it's been happening

Hence why I'm near enough 100% sure it's not the GPU, and it's got something to do with the update.
