Your charging question can't be answered unless you tell us what model iPad - iPad 1, 2, 3, 4 or mini - you have.
An iPad 1 or 2 will charge in 3-4 hours. An iPad 4 in 7-8 hours.
Cheers, Tom 😉

Not sure what you mean that it won't work while charging? I use all of my devices and my Mac while they are charging....are you having an issue?

Thanks Tom, it's an iPad 3
Gail, when I get low battery msg, I plug it in but then can't use it
It's only a year old so I think it's strange that it used to charge to 100 percent really quickly and now when it charges overnight, it only gets to like 60 percent
Hi Joyce,
Why can't you use it?
GB
Screen goes black and if I press circle to try to turn it on, it just shows me battery with short red line. But I don't run it to 0 percent so I'm assuming as along as there's some batter left, I should be able to plug it in and continue to use it?
You can charge it at any time. It is quite detrimental to run the battery to 0% on a regular basis.
Gail, my 10 yr old switched her non apple charger with mine so she could charge hers faster. I switched them back when I realized mine was charging sooo slowly and that she switched them. Could have using the non apple charger affected my iPad?
Gail, or anyone :)
Absolutely....I think you need to take it into the Apple Store and have them take a look at it. There is no reason (unless the battery has been completely run down - and then it's only a short delay until it gets a little juice back) that you should not be able to use it while it is charging....(unless there is something about an iPad 2 that I don't know about ).
Cheers,
GB
The other charger may not have caused damage, but if it wasn't capable of providing at least 10 watts, it would definitely cause the iPad to charge very slowly.
Not sure about that - I'm guessing that it is possible. I wouldn't recommend using a non-Apple charger, however.

GB
Glad you are in on this, stedman! 😀

Gail...its an ipad 3...I think I will bring it to the store because even when it gets a little juice, screen goes black again. Thanks for help!
