internal/built in microphone not working, I know it did before?

Only thing missing is option for internal microphone in System pref/ sounds. I have feedback window and there is a mic logo in input volume, an I have a calibration window. have Lion and have only done updates.. have not seen a fix for this. Most questions like this are not answered. ..Peace

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

how is it supposed to do speech recognition then? I am sure I used that a few months ago. And Mountain Lion has Dictation program built in, which I read excert from Mac World article."There are some limitations to OS X’s dictation tool. First, if you use your Mac’s internal microphone, the sound quality of your voice won’t be great. Since speech recognition depends on picking up on some subtle vocal distinctions, you might find that your results are not ideal." I just want it for commands, but dictation would be pretty kool. thanx Kaz, but I hope that is not the case.
