App crashes after Security Update 2013-002

I have installed Security Update 2013-002 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 and now certain apps like Safari, Software Update, Mail, Adobe Reader crash with a segmentation fault. Other apps like Photoshop, Google Chrome work fine.

I found a thread on here of someone who was having a similar problem with Chrome crashing and he fixed it by repairing Disk Permissions but thats not made any difference to me.

Any ideas?

Test in Safe Boot to see if the crashes happen there. MIght also try testing from a different account.

Shift key at the startup chime and expect a much longer time to boot up. No Wi-Fi in Safe Boot, so if that's how you connect you won't be able to go anywhere. But you will be able to see if Safari, or Software Update, for example, are still crashing on open.

thanks for the tip. having rebooted though it seems as if finder is now completely broken as well, its crashing with the same problem on login and wont restart so i think this installtion is totally screwed. i guess i will have to do a clean install. pity you cant get newer versions of OS X on DVD as it is I will have to install 10.6 then look at upgrading it. im not going to install anymore security updates for 10.6. if i could get 10.8 on DVD I could just put that straight on
