MacBook Pro 2011 Snow Leopard Constant Kernel Panics

Before the Kernel Panics I was getting a lot of screen flickering and feezing. After my operating system Snow Leopard 10.6.8 was reinstalled and a new logic board put in I started getting Kernel Panics. Back to the Apple store and my computer went out for a new Logic Board, Graphic Card and Display and I am still getting Kernel Panics daily. I purchased my MacBook Pro in March of 2011 and this all started in April. Below is my latest Kernel Panic report. Any ideas what is wrong with my computer?

I'm absolutely hopeless on hardware issues of this kind. But after all the repairs you've had, I would try turning your eye of suspicion on

a possible dodgy peripheral, e.g. external HD
third-party software

I'm assuming - though it doesn't read that way - that you reinstalled the OS AFTER you had repairs done on each occasion, not before? (Or that Apple did it for you).

I loaded and posted my latest report from today of my Kernel Panic. I am not sure what "the full log with loaded kexts" is. I didn't add that the Kernel Panics happen at any time and usually when I am done with my computer and move it.

There's usually a section that begins "loaded kexts." Maybe this log is formatted differently. Try disconnecting the Toshiba external USB hub. Have you installed any third party RAM? Even if not, check the RAM by running a few loops of Rember.

EDIT: Oh, OK I'm seeing loaded kexts: com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport! 4.0

Third party programs with kernel extensions can be a culprit. Try uninstalling that or seeing if there's an update.

But you needn't completely uninstall a program(s) suspected of creating these panics. This may not always work, but the worst that can happen is it will fail. Far better than completely uninstalling and reinstalling the full program, if it proves not to be the cause. Instead, you can temporarily disable a program. This may be especially useful when there are several suspects.

To temporarily disable/unload any .kext (kernel extension) which may be causing the problem, do the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste

sudo kextunload

Important, leave a space after kextunload

Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.

This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/

Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.

This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.

Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Kernel Panics may be caused either by software or hardware. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

WZZZ from NYC, thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. I have to go out for a few hours and then I will go through your entire text and try your directions. By the way I just bought more ram from Crucial to install thinking I don't have enough ram and that might be causing the Kernel Panics.

Crucial, if it's not the discount line, is usually OK. But you could try running without it to see if the KPs stop.

I am not sure what "loaded kexts: com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport! 4.0" is or where it is located in my computer. Is it software that I installed? I am using a small USB hub from Quirky that my Toshiba external hard drive is plugged into. I use that external hard drive for Time Machine. Is it possible it is my external hard drive causing the kernel Panics? Wzzz you are so knowledgable with Mac computers.

Open the Applications folder inside the Macintosh HD folder. Do you see anything with Ambrosia in the name. Have a look here. Maybe something you will recognize. I'm not familiar with any of their programs, but I have seen a number of logs from kernel panics showing what yours is showing.

It sure has to be from something you installed. It doesn't come with a plain vanilla installation.

I have a game called Aquaria from Ambrosia and SnapzPro, both I had for a very long time. Do you think it is a problem that I haven't updated SnapzPro? I think I have an older version. Also I can unplug my Toshiba hard drive which is always plugged in. The Apple geniuses think that an upgrade to Mountain Lion will solve the Kernel Panics. I want to keep Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro because it is more game friendly. I have ML on my iMac where I don't play games. I can't believe that will solve the Kernel Panics. The weird thing is the Kernel Panics usually happen when I am done playing a game or done on the Internet and move my computer.

I don't know anything about those apps, but I would suggest that you look through the Extensions folder and follow the directions I gave above for disabling/unloading a culprit kernel extension/kext. If the panics then continue, you know it wasn't that and you can reload it.

It might, but I don't see why upgrading the OS to ML would eliminate the panics.

You could try updating those programs, but that will only make a difference if you find kexts from them in Extensions.

You could try unplugging the Toshiba drive, but only do one thing at a time or you won't know what solved it, if that happens. And you also have that USB hub. And it could also be coming from RAM. Either completely remove the new Crucial RAM, or at least reseat it.

Finding the cause of these can be elusive.

Here is an update on my ongoing computer issues. I took my computer to the Apple Store genius bar yesterday. The genius installed my new Ram from Crucial which upgrades my memory from 4GB to 8GB. I unplugged my Qurky mini hub and Toshiba external hard drive I use for Time Machine. Maybe the hub or external hard drive caused the Kernel Panics since when I moved my computer it happened and those externals were plugged in. Since yesterday I only plug in my external hard drive right to the USB port when I want to a update to my computer to save to Time Machine. So far no Kernel Panics, but it has only been a day.

WZZZ since you gave me the most help I wanted to thank you and also say it has been 1 week without Kernel Panics. Do you think it was the upgrade of ram or unplugging the small USB hub? Most times the Kernel Panic occurred when I was done with what I was doing and moved my laptop and maybe jossled the USB hub. I only plug in the Toshiba external hard drive when I want to save to Time Machine.

Hard to say which one exactly. At least where the hub is concerned, I guess you could plug it back in and see if you get any panics, that is, if you really want to know. But whatever it is, since the panics were "constant" and you haven't had any more, it looks like one or the other was the fix.

Right after I wrote I had no Kernel Panics in a week I had one while I was playing a game. Actually when I was done playing and I moved my computer. Moving my computer is usually when it happens. I can't understand after a week why the KP happened. You are great at reading the Kernel Panic data and diagnosing what the problem could be. I am not good at following directions to find the source of the problem. To say the least I am frustrated and disappointed.

Then sounds like some kind of intermittent hardware fault brought on by moving the computer around. Is it shut down when you move it? It should be.
