Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (rotation lock or mute notifications), then you can lock/unlock the rotation by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
If your iPad keeps going into sleep mode then have you tried a soft-reset to see if that fixes it ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Jun 9, 2013 9:05 AM in response to jboddy1by Diana Stephens,The little lock icon means that portrait orientation is turned off, it has nothing to do with actual locking. To turn this feature off, you need to push the home button fast twice (double-click) and scroll all the way over to the left, there is an icon called "portrait orientation lock" (farthest left icon), tap this to lock and unlock portrait orientation.
To fix the locking or sleeping every few seconds, you need to increase your "auto lock timer". to do this, tap "settings", and select "general". scroll down to "auto-lock" and change your auto-lock setting. I have mine set to 5 minutes.
