Thanks all for the detailed input. I developed the same problem -- search.installmac taking over my searches, in all my browsers, even when reset to Google -- when I somehow downloaded something called TuneUp.

Uninstalling Geneio didn't solve the problem. Following instructions given by Installmac faq worked for Chrome and Firefox, not Safari

I eventually found relatively simple instructions to uninstall TuneUp and trashed installmac files as well. This *seems* to have got rid of the pest.

Mr. Thomas..

These are the instruction i get from the link you provide:

Next, execute the following commands (one line at a time) in the Terminal. Note that the first time you run a “sudo” command, you will be asked for your password. (You will need to be logged in as an admin user, or it won’t work.) When you do so, nothing will show up when you type… that’s normal, just type the password and press return. Be sure to copy each command directly and paste it into the Terminal; don’t try re-typing these commands!

sudo rm -f /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist

sudo rm -f /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib

Now restart your computer. When it restarts, the “Application” process shouldn’t be running anymore, so you can safely delete the framework containing it using:

sudo rm -rf /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework

Please be very careful, and keep in mind that I take no responsibility if you try these steps and do something wrong!

...and it solved the problem.

Pay very close attention to the very first word in the text you pasted from my site: "Next." There is an instruction preceding that which you did not mention, and which is very important. (Namely, running the Genieo uninstaller, which, while insufficient for the full task, does remove some important items.) Fortunately, you also messed up another part of the instructions by not removing the .dylib file. If you had, you would be having a great deal of trouble making your computer work properly.

This is why you need to read those instructions carefully and follow them TO THE LETTER, if you follow them at all. And please don't re-post an incomplete version of those instructions anywhere, as that could cause serious problems for others.

Hi Fatboy101,

If a program has automatically installed iteself, yuo can delete it by going into your extensions bar on Safari and/or Chrome and select the progam and press 'Uninstalll'.

Also, Just to clarify, you said when you updated Safari, it installed as a default search engine, yes?

Well if so, next time be sure to read next to the tick box of the Terms of Service tick box. There should be an option saying "Make *progam name* my default search browser" It will automatically be ticked; untick it.

Hope this helps,

This happened to me and I freaked out! After many searches online, I found various "uninstall" programs and "tips" on how to remove the browser and homepage. The homepage was easily changeable by going into Safari preferences and reseting the homepage. However, when I tried doing this for the browser, it would continue to redirect me to bing!

Ultimately, after "uninstalling" the program and restarting my computer, the browser reset and Safari appeared to be fine.

Hello Thomas,

Thanks for guidance and wonderful demonstration of perseverence. In my Safari browser, not Firefox (browser of of choice), nor Chrome, opening page is the Genieo(G) search engine. I cannot find G on my MacBook Pro, I cannot follow your guidance. Any suggestions.

I do not see G as an Extension by the way.

Further, my use of Safari is minimal, 4-6 times a year, I was tempted to uninstall Safari and see what other files Hazel detected, but I am perplexed why I cannot find G.

Upon reflection, the last action related to Safari, was probably the Mavericks update to 10.9.1.

Thanks for any guidance,

Best,

Please be sure to read the removal instructions carefully. Note that the instructions make no mention of a Genieo browser extension (there isn't one), and there are a number of different items that may not be present (such as the Genieo application). Also make note of the fact that you still have to change your home page setting after removing it.
