My Virgin broadband email account refuses to send.

My machine is an Apple Imac with the latest greatest operating system and all the updates. (mountain lion)

I have an Australian Virginbroadband account and the emails had been working totally trouble free for a number of months, then without any reason my system decided that it will not send an email.

I receive emails without a problem.

I can browse the internet without problem.

the apple email connection doctor can make connection to both the inward and outward email servers whenever I fire it off without any errors.

my apple system just will not send an email.

I have checked that all the account details are still correct (they worked for 6 months error free)

I have run a rebuild on each mailbox. (inbox, flagged, outbox, sent)

I have checked that my machine's time is correct.

I have had one test email in the outbox now for 2 months. it was generated as a reply to an email I received. it is a minimal thing with no attachments.

Checking with Virgin, my system is using the correct ports.

there are no account quotas that have been exceeded.

the configuration details are still in the valid format.

the servers are working properly and other users can send emails without problems.

from what I can see everything in my machine is correctly configured and there are no error messages that I can see.

all is correct except that it doesnt work.

when I have ceased internet use I disconnect from my provider. close all windows and then send the machine to sleep.

I have cold booted the machine from a power off.

when I check configurations I find nothing corrupted or missing.

the only thing I havent found in my system is the actual log trace of the outward mail attempt.

can anyone put their finger on what the **** the problem is.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), mail will not send

Linc it seems that the key words are 'Client host rejected:Access denied'. I have no idea why it did that.

would this be a protocol error from the apple end causing it or something from the server?

Linc

I appear to have solved the problem.

Virgin support dont seem to be aware that their server configuration has changed.

I just changed my settings for the smtp server from 'no authentication required' to add my username and password in the smtp server list configuration. both emails I tried just now have sent successfully.

very frustrating.

I verified each of my configuration entries with virgin support on the phone.

they were sure I had them correct.

I thank the users in other threads who tried adding their username and password and found it worked.

( Linc you're a legend. I would never have cracked this without seeing the send trace and wondering why the server was giving me a knockback. I thank you sire. )

Jun 12, 2013 8:58 AM in response to Trefolex

the definitive cause of the problem appears to have been an incorrect server configuration that occurred during an upgrade..

this erroneous configuration required the username and password entered to make it work.

being an incorrect configuration meant that Virgin Support knew nothing about it, since they were unaware of the config error.

after I advised Virgin of my correction they must have checked, found the error and corrected it, because the next morning the mail send was broken again.

removing the changed settings that I used to get the system working, ie restoring the original configuration, has the system working again.

during all this I must say that the apple mail software has actually been working flawlessly.

Virgin are trying to make sure the errors dont happen again.

My Virgin broadband email account refuses to send.
