I have been given an ipone 3 and O2 have unlocked it for me. I have connected the phone up to itunes and synced it with a new sim card in it but where does it tell me that my phone is now unlocked??? Don´t want to update the phone in case itunes hasn´t recognised the unlock code.

There is no "unlock" code for iPhones. You should have gotten an email from o2 stating that your phone is unlocked and instructions on how to complete the process. Did you follow the instructions in the email?
The unlocking process is done with iTunes, which I believe requires restoring the iPhone with iTunes.
You should have received an email with instructions after the unlock request was received by Apple from O2 and it was ready.
Sorry I should have been more clearer. I have followed the instructions from O2 and synced my iphone do I need to restore the phone now???? If yes, what do I do (sorry I´m blond lol)

I don't believe just syncing will do it but if so, you would be provided notice with iTunes that your iPhone is now unlocked after the process was completed.

I did this but didn´t get the confirmation. Been onto O2 again and the phone is definitely unlocked. Apparently I may have to wait for itunes to catch up!!! Will check again later. Thanks for all your help.

The process should say: "Congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked.." in the iTunes window. You need to restore as new.
