reading Windows Excel files with Excel for Mac

In our office we have PCs and iMacs. I need to read an excel file created on my Windows PC on the iMac using Office for Mac Excel. How do this? Is there a file format I save the file to on the Windows PC? Or, is there file format on the Office for Mac Excel program with which I can read the Windows Excel file?
