Why is my screen randomly going black?

Why is my screen randomly going black? I have an iMac and this has been happening for a couple weeks now and it's getting worse. It's not sleeping and I can't do anything unless I hold the power button to turn it off. I've seen other posts regarding this same problem for other users of all types of Macs. So what is the solution?

Thanks, but I don't think that is what is happening. I don't get a screen that says I need to restart as described in the links you sent me. It just goes black. It sounds to me like a lot of people are experiencing this problem with no matter to age of machine or even type of machine. Sounds like a software issue with one of the latest updates to me. Could this be?

What are your screen saver settings?

I point my screen saver to a directory of photos.

Just before the screen saver starts displaying the photos it presents a black screen.

you could check the setting from system preferences(the gear wheels)

set the screen saver to start after : never and see if the black screen stops happening.

it may just be that your screen saver is kicking in but cant find the directory or the items in the directory to display.
