When updating software I was asked if I wanted to store contacts and calenders in iCloud and without more info decline and now Ive lost access to my .mac email account

When updating software I was asked if I wanted to store contacts and calenders on iCloud and declined because it didn't offer enought information about

cost and now I have lost my .mac email account. What should I do, please?

MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
