Q: How do I know what is taking up most of my storage in iCloud?

I keep getting a message on my IPhone4s that it cannot be backed up to ICloud becuase there is not enought storage.

I thought apps, Itune songs, purchased books and Photos don't count towards the 5 free Gigs?

It must be data but I dont have it save any mail, just Contacts, Reminders, Calandar, Find my phone, Photo Stream & Documents & Data

When I look on my phone settings, manage storage it shows

IPhone 4S is 4.4 GB

IPad4 is 96 MB

IPod is 51 MB

Documents & Data 30.3 MB

Medical app is 30.0 MB

Preview is 39.5 KB

430 MB available of 5.0 GB on ICloud

If I click on the preview line all is says is Documents & Data 39.5 KB there is no way to turn off/not save preview. But I don't understand what I don't have enough storage. I removed sync ITunes sonds off my Iphone & only play them on my I Pod. I use the IPhone for my apps.

Any idea whats taking up so much storage? And how do I delete apps that are saved in my I cloud that I no longer want?

Thank you for any help,

D.

Photo stream photos don't count against your storage but the photo and videos in your camera roll are part of the backup and do.  As you said, purchased media doesn't.  All of your text messages and their attachments are also included in the backup so you might check to see if you have lots of photos and videos in your messages.

You might also want to connect the phone to iTunes and check the usage bar graph to see how large "Other" is.  Sometimes that can't get extremely large, leading to large backups.

I didn't realize the photo's in my text messages were included in the back up. I will delete a bunch of them! I also connected my IPhone 4s to iTunes and seen other and it had a little over a gig used but I wasn't able to view what it is or click on anything to bring me to a screen for other.

Thank you for your help, I'll start deleting old text and try to figure out how to get into "Other" so I can see what that could be. I think it may be my old phone, I had it for a while but it had a defect & it was replaced but I remember deleting that device somewhere(ICloud maybe?) it was listed but possibly that saved the info even though I switched all that to the new phone.

It may take some time but I have a better Idea now. Thank you again

If your "Other" category is only just over a gig that is normal and can't be reduced.  It includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc.  It's only a problem when it becomes multiple gigs, at which point restoring the device will normally reduce it back to 1-1 1/2 GB or so.
