AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme can repeat or extend the wireless signal created by another Apple router. So, before we go any further, the first question would be.....
What device is producing your wireless signal at the present time?
Hi Thank you for the quick answer
Device to be amplified is a"livebox" from France Telecom
An Airport cannot repead that signal, but there are many third party extenders that should do the trick.
Unfortunately, an Apple product would not be compatible with a livebox device if you are planning to repeat the signal wirelessly.
If that is the case, livebox might have a repeater that they offer that would work with their wireless router......or.....you might want to take a look at a "universal" repeater like the Netgear WPN300.
I know it's a while now since this question was put, but I hope this response might help someone.
I am also in a stone house in France and have an Orange Sagem Livebox. I have set up an extended wireless network using 2 Airport Express devices.
The 1st Airport Express is plugged into the LAN (coloured red) port on the Livebox. You need to configure it to create a wireless network in "Bridge" mode. This will be a new wireless network, separate from that of the Livebox. I usually disable the Livebox's wireless network at this point by un-ticking wireless mode in the Livebox's configuration screen.
The 2nd Airport Express is towards the other end of the house. During initial start-up, by default this 2nd device will offer to configure itself to extend the network created by the 1st Airport Express. Just accept the offer and it will run the configuration automatically.
This gives good coverage in my setting although it is possible to keep adding Airport Expresses to extend further.
Note that the Livebox is still the actual router, even though its wireless network is no longer being used. This seems to have undesirable consequences:
- I need to run a Guest network. An Airport Express running in Bridge mode provides this option, but for some, unfathomable reason, an Airport Extreme will not.
- I tried connecting the 2nd device to the base station by ethernet cable. This does not work, whether the base station is an Airport Express or an Airport Extreme. This is a real problem as I need to extend the network into the adjoining house, which can only be done with wire.
So what I really want to do is find out how to bypass the router function of the Livebox and just use it as an ADSL modem. If anyone can shed any light on this, I will be very grateful!

Perhaps the logical place to ask a question about modifying a Livebox product would be a Livebox support forum.
Sure, it is possible that another user on an Apple support site might have an answer on a one year old post, but the chances that the person who knows the answer will ever see your post buried here under the title of wifi extension are at best, extremely remote.
You can wait to see if anyone will answer, but you will likely get a much faster and more informed response if you post your Livebox question on a Livebox support forum, or contact your Internet Service Provider that supplied the product to you.
1. Bob, you are the person who advised the OP that "an Apple product would not be compatible with alivebox device if you are planning to repeat the signal wirelessly". This is not correct. What he wished to do was perfectly feasible, in the manner explained in my response to him above.
2. You further advised the OP that "livebox might have a repeater that they offer that would work with their wireless router". Again, this is not correct. "[L]ivebox" is not a manufacturer or vendor and could not offer repeaters or indeed anything else.
3. Regarding your proposed Netgear WPN300 solution: if you don't want to set up an Airport wifi network (with its many advantages over the Livebox as wifi router) then powerline is the way most people go, in France, if they have stone houses.
4. Further to your post to me -
4. You might consider editing your response to the OP.
What he wished to do was perfectly feasible, in the manner explained in my response to him above.
The OP asked if he could have an AirPort router connect using wireless to his Livebox and have the AirPort extend the wireless signal from the Livebox.
What you proposed was to extend using an Ethernet connection. Ethernet is not wireless.
Odd to think one would wish to "modify" the Livebox - configuration would be preferable!
Modify means to change. One or more settings will need to be changed......IF......it is even possible to have the Livebox function as a simple modem.
Whether you choose to configure the settings or change the settings on the Livebox, I hope that you find your answer.
But, I don't think that you will find the answer to your question about how to change the settings on a Livebox product on a forum for Apple products. But, I may be wrong.....and will be watching to see if someone will answer.
"What you proposed was to extend using an Ethernet connection. Ethernet is not wireless."
On the contrary! Have you read my post? I clearly explained how I set up a wireless network. What's more, I expressly said that it was not possible to set up an Ethernet connection between the 2 Airport Express devices.
In a computing context, "modify" and "configure" are terms of art with quite different meanings. Look it up!
And no, maybe I won't get an answer to my question here. But I have shared my knowledge and experience in the hope that it may help someone else.

LAN ports are Ethernet ports. Your solution uses an Ethernet connection to connect an AirPort to the Livebox. The OP wanted wireless.
But, thanks for the humor. I am laughing. You have made my day.
