I am trying to install bootable version of Snow Leopard on my external HD. I put the OS disc into the computer in and click on the "Install Mac OS X" icon and get this message:
You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X.
You have Install Mac OS X 23.1.1.
I've seen a few videos on youtube on how to do this, but all without coming into tha above message.

1. Restarts the computer from the install DVD. You may need to press the Option key instead.
2. Follow the onscreen directions, specifying the external drive as the installation target.

I have few questions...
1. By doing the above do I not risk overwriting my current insternal drive?
2. By doing the above do I not also risk wiping the current OS (Lion) on the internal drive?

You don't. Be sure to select the external drive as the target, and back up the internal drive as soon as you can.

At what point will I be able to select the external drive and is there chance that the computer it could automatically choose the internal drive and carry begin installation?

I tried Install a got the following message...
Install Failed
Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer
!
The Installer could not copy the necessary support files.
Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again.
Tried it again but still nothing 😟
