Shipping Carrier lost my MacBook Pro - SN: C0******F91 - Possible theft?

Short story:

I purchased a given model of macbook from Amazon (for $2200), to find out the seller sent wrong model macbook (now valued at $1000). I shipped it back insured with usps.com. USPS Tracking says the package arrived at the seller's local usps office, but from there - noone knows where the macbook is at. Seller says he/she didn't receive the package. USPS local agents referred me to submitting a claim. I have submitted the claim today, but this is going to be a time consuming process.

I managed to get the Serial Number and Model Number of the wrong macbook seller shipped to me.

My question is: Would anyone at apple be able to notify the local law enforcement institutions if and when this macbook is activated for use? I don't want to know personally, but I would like to ensure that this sort of business will responde in front of the court.

The laptop was reimaged, and I didn't activated as I didn't want to. No other software were installed on it.

I have a whole new macbook now which I got it 1 week ago. I'm able to track my own macbook, but don't know how I could track the lost one.

I'm so happy I have a macbook, and am proud to have a macbook for my first time ever. It's just awesome, but am short of $2200. 😟

I appreciate any recommendations.

Thank you!

Hi KinDn,

Sorry for your troubles. We can't do anything for your here. This is a user to user forum, and we are just users like you. No way to track the Mac since it was not set up - so no Find My Mac, and it is not linked to any Apple ID.

If it is lost at USPS, then it will either turn up, or you will get your insurance money. But Apple has no way to know if a particular serial number of a stolen, lost, or otherwise AWOL Mac is being used by someone it shouldn't be.

That's pretty much the story....

Cheers,

Thanks for the reply Gail.

Apple should keep track of any of its product (knowing the high cost value of their product) - this way they'll prevent multiple other similar situations with mine.

I have just contacted Apple, and they referred me to my local police deparment. I submitted a claim with police too.

I'm not concerned as much as about the money loss. This is going to happen to other people is my main concern at this point. I have this new laptop - and thanks God I've already activated my "Find My Mac".

Stil - when a stolen MacBook is activated on Apple.com, the law enforcement should immediately be approached and they should start investigating issue.

That's just my thought.

It does. But, you purchased the product from Amazon, not Apple.

"Would anyone at apple be able to notify the local law enforcement institutions if and when this macbook is activated for use?"

It's not up to Apple to notify a local law enforcement agency of a lost transhipped product. That is up to the shipper from which the shipment disappeared. In this specific case, that would be USPS.
