Q: My 2006 iMac has vertical lines that wont disappear - can this be fixed?

My 2006 model iMac has vertical lines on the monitor that won't go away and are growing more all the time. Can this be fixed? I was told about the iMac Graphics Firmware Update but it doesn't work on my model - seems to be from 2011 models. Any suggestions?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2006 model

    Hello,

Have you blown the dust out lately?

Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see double lines it's a Video card/VRAM problem, if the lines do not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable.

Thanks for that - I did the temp thing and I think it's pretty normal - around 40.

I also did the screen shot and when opened it in preview and moved it - the vertical lines did not move.

So am assuming your suggstion of cable or LCD applies. Does that mean total replacement of either?

Thanks for your help - it's becoming really annoying!

    Cheers
