I'm going to restore my iMac to factory settings, but i want to keep my applications (many of them has an activation key for only one licens) i also want to keep important documents and photos. I've a 1TB Extern HDD i maybe can use for backup?

Do you mean you don't already have backups? If so, start doing that immediately, and certainly before doing anything drastic to your Mac. Time Machine is built-in. You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

There are some alternatives in the green box of FAQ #27 (second link above).

What, exactly, are you trying to accomplish?

Restore my Mac, but still keep applications and other important files.
