Apple sold the iPod touch 4th generation as new on their website ~2 weeks ago (replaced by 5th generation 16GB model). It won't be getting iOS 7.

Apple sold the 3rd generation iPad for 8 months before replacing it with the 4th gen model. It won't be getting AirDrop even though the device isn't that old, and is slightly more powerful than the iPad Mini.

TL;DR: Apple is a business, and it will add and drop features to devices and software as it wants. Your point is moot, and I'm not sure what any of us can do about your opinions regarding this feature. If you're really that angry over this (lack of) feature, I think there's a bigger problem at hand.

Actually you are wrong. iPhone 5 the 5th gen iPod touch and the likes

have a new WIFI chip which supports 802.11a in addition to 802.11 b/g/n (which is supported by older devices too). iPhone 4/4S lack this 802.11a dual band WIFI Direct which together with Bluetooth 4.0 is what makes airdrop a reality!

The new WIFI chip does this by quickly switching back and forth between the WIFI network your are on and creating a peer to peer 5Ghz WIFI connection. Interestingly, Bluetooth 4.0 is absent on even iPhone 4 and lower devices. It's role in airdrop is to find and connect to a peer iPhone as this latest version of Bluetooth doesn't require pairing. Note that while Bluetooth assists this way the actual data transfer is done on WIFI!

So I would say it ain't apple fault although there are ways to implement airdrop on 802.11n as well!
