I did the recent security update on MacOS X 10.6.8 and restarted. Now my mailbox icons in Mail have all turned into trash can icons. I tried restarting again, quitting mail, etc but it's not fixing. This appears to just be a cosmetic issue. Anyone know of a solution?

Try a safe boot, power up holding the shift key, hold the shift till you see the progress bar, login take a look, log out and restart normally. (This boot will take longer than normal)
Also try highlighting a mailbox in the side bar of Mail and from the menu bar click Mailbox, at the bottom click rebuild mailbox, if that helps try the rest one at a time.
Never heard this one.

I did try the rebuild and that didn't help but thanks for the idea.
Did you try the safe boot? Shift key at power up start chime and hold till progress bar appears.
