Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml?

Every time I open iTunes I have to agree to the License Agreement.

This started happening around the time I upgraded to iTunes 11.0.4.4.

I have Windows 7, so I moved and let iTunes recreate the C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes directory, but this has not helped.

Then, I notice that whenever I quit iTunes the file itunesprefs.xml is deleted. Is this normal?

Thanks,

Jim

For those who want to uninstall McAfee, simply do it in the normal manner via Control Panel > Programs then run the MCPR Cleanup Tool and reboot.

Then install whatever you want.

This ONLY applies to the home (Consumer) version and not to those with Family Protection or Anti-Theft installed - for that please contact Technical Support.

Enterprise users please consult the support portal.

Summary (my opinion)

Ex Brit is moderator from McAfee forums. Possibly is biased, please do your own homework when following his or my advice. He claims that Norton has the same problem. That information was NEVER confirmed. MSE, Avast do not and never did have that problem confirmed. AVG as far as I know fixed that problem months ago. He also claims "incorrect coding on iTunes designers part". I am not familiar with coding, but not new to IT, to know that it is impossible to bypass Antivirus (that is it's whole purpose). You (as computer user) do not want to depend in your life on any one single software product and if you do - you set yourself up.

Once again - equation is simple - there is no alternative to Itunes there are hundreds of Antiviruses. Some of AV solutions are BETTER for Windows consumer users and free. Recommendations MSE and AVAST. I have also read on that thread, that McAfee provided refund to one of the users here. At the very least refund request will make them pay attention to you and that particular problem, that is if someone is a masochist enough to stick.

My personal and biased (I feel that bias is for the right reason) opinion is that McAfee is not targeted for consumer market. It registers to many false positives. In my line of work I recommend uninstalling that program and in 100% cases it fixes multiple problems.

Considering that you have occupied last three pages of that thread, it may be helpful to newcomers. so they do not have to request for summary again.

Huh.

I'm still having the problem - my McAfee says it's up to date, but when close iTunes while realtime monitoring is going, I still get the "accept terms" thing for iTunes on my next startup.

Two things to note:

1. I seem to remember that before when it was happening I had to sign into iTunes *and* go back and change my preferences back to see things that were in the cloud, but now, once I sign into my account, my preferences seem to still be active.

2. I'm also getting a notice about an iTunes update, and I haven't installed that yet.

Thoughts?

I noticed last night in iTunes ver. 11.1.3.8, if you show the menu bar, there is two options on closing iTunes. Under File, you can see Close Window and Exit. I stoped using the exit and the close botton on the top right and started to use the Close Window under File and the problem stoped. Also, using the Close Window stops the iTunes.exe as if you were exiting the program. I too have the latest ver of McAfee and Win8 and was having this very same problem. It seems to me that not just McAfee is the culprit here, Apple in thier infanite arrogance most certainly is to blame for this as well.

After more than 4 1/2 hours on the phone with McAfee tech support, they admitted that McAfee Total Protection interferes with iTunes by causing iTunes to reopen to the terms and conditions page, or the tutorial page. If you're experiencing this problem and believe it's an Apple issue, delete McAfee and install Microsoft Security Essentials for free. iTunes will now operate 100% correctly. If you want to go back to using McAfee, just uninstall MSE and reinstall it. I did that two or three times. However, if you get tired of McAFee wreaking havoc on your use of iTunes, which I use extensively, be prepared to fight for a refund. They are "working" on a fix, have been since July, but have no expected release date. So it is NOT an Apple issue.
