I've ordered a MBA i7 with 8GB RAM today but reading at the tech specs page I see that the 9 hours battery life tests were done with the i5 processor, I'm having second thoughts now and wondering how much battery I'll gain by only going with the i5 instead of i7

The battery life between the i5 and i7 intel processors varies little... so you didn't make a mistake at all... It will still get around the 9 hours that it has proclaimed
Thanks for the reply, I wonder what is the difference between battery loss and speed gain with i5-i7, it is the speed jump good enough to stay with i7 and get lower battery life or it will be no noticeable with i5 and get better battery life?

I wouldn't know the two processors' effects on battery life because I only have one of them and I don't have a comparison reference.
I do experience some battery issues: my MBA 2013 11" i5 doesn't deliver promised battery life. This is currently being discussed in a thread here names MBA 2013 rapid battery drain.
totally untrue. many I7 users are getting average 4 LESS batt life. Highly inaccurate statement
I have borrow my friend Stefans I7 13". to compare to my 13" I5
after running same apps on both and background videos Stefans I7 was 48%. whereas mine was at 81%
this was after unplug and 4 hours 20mins identical use on both
also made sure in activity monitor both machines were being loaded the same with background mem usage
Anyone claiming I7 and I5 are getting "close to same batt life " is making a highly untrue and empirically contrary statement
