AVI with quicktime?

Why can´t I play AVI files with quicktime when it is listed here that quicktime supports AVI files? (--> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3775?viewlocale=en_US)

Does anyone know how I can play and edit AVI files on my mac?

quicktime-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

1. Because there's no codec installed for those specific AVIs. AVI is a container, not a format.

2. Try installing VLC and/or Perian. Some AVIs just can't be played in Mac OS X.
