I paid for the upgrade to Quick Time Pro 7.7.4 on Windows 8.
as you can see in this image I applied the license key OK.
But I cannot see any menus or features that I can use to edit a video. I have rebooted. Suggestions please. Thanks! Nigel

Your key does indeed appear to be correctly registered. What is the format of the movie you're trying to edit? If it's MPEG-1, you can't edit that format, only view it, so the editing features won't activate.
And just so I'm not making an unwarranted assumption, you are looking in QuickTime Player for the editing features, yes?

Yes I'm looking in QuickTime Player for some kind of editing / recording features. But there's nothing there. See below - the File menu for example ...
The file I would like to edit is an MP4 file - Is that possible? If not, that's not an issue - I mainly want to create new recordings and then edit those.
Your screen shot shows all the editing features enabled. Where then are you having difficulties? If you just don't know how, this may help:
