Is it possible to backup sms text messages and imessages from an iphone outside of itunes then restore them from a mac to an iphone through a third party app or software? My iphone backup is corrupt per apple and they are suggesting starting from scratch due to a software issue, but i'd like to restore by messages.

Back up the phone to iCloud and to a different computer. With 2 backups perhaps one of them will restore correctly.
You can use a third party software to back up your iPhone sms messages without using itunes.

A program called iPhone SMS Backup & Restore provide a solution to restore sms messages from iTunes backup to iPhone. Restored messages will me merged with the existing ones on iPhone. Try it.
