I have just bought an LG Smart TV -- 55LA7400 -- which uses the same wireless network as my MacBook Pro (retina). I would like to link the computer to the TV without mirroring thru Apple TV (thus freeing the Apple TV for another, not-smart TV). Can it be done? Is there an application to download that would make it happen?

Without an Apple Tv? That's entirely dependent on the TV. Contact your TVs Manufacturer's support to find out what it can or cannot do as suggested.
Otherwise an Apple Tv will let you do exactly that.
