iPhone will not sync to new iTunes

No matter what I do, I can't get my iPhone 5 to sync with the iTunes on my laptop. I've done all the software updates (on both the phone and my laptop) and I've also restarted both devices. I've tested both my cable and USB port; they are both functioning normally. When I open my iTunes and connect my iPhone, nothing happens. There is no device detected. I'd like to believe this problem is coming from some kind of software issue. I don't know.

I'm using OS X 10.84 and iTunes 11.04

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
