Q: kernel panic, looks GPU related

Well that's new, it's just restarted after waking up (one of the more common times it'll cause a kernel panic) and there was no warning message after the restart and no kernel panic in the console log.  This Mac is driving me nuts

A Kernel Panic can be caused by any one of hundreds of underlying issues. Please post a kernel panic log.

If you have completely different reasons shown on different panic logs, and panics in different routines, that NON-Trend may indicate Memory problems (in any Mac except the Mac Pro tower or cylinder, which use Error-Correcting Code memory).

Check my post on page 6. Every kernel panic so far has been GPU related. It does have 2 sticks of Crucial memory installed but I'm sure that's OK. I guess I could try just using the Mac with 1 stick and seeing if it still happens then swap that and check again.

A dozen GPU panics may be a GPU problem, PROVIDED you do not have a lot of graphics-related third-party kexts installed as well. Non-Apple kernel extensions appear at the top of the list of kernel extensions in the panic report.

Blatant Troublemakers include so-called anti-virus software, Virtualization software, and copy-protection software such as Pace support. There are many others.

Ive been getting this issue as well but not all crashes are being documented in my case.  I have had sudden restarted when it seems that I load a graphic intense program and boom it goes down.  But this is now also affecting my windows side as well now.

  Im wondering have you tried bootcamp yet to see if your issue affects that as well?

Interesting that's affecting Windows, not tried that myself. I've only got a Windows XP install anyway, and I'm not keen on putting Windows anywhere near my Mac.

Then yours is very likely to be a GPU problem. The number of all alike panics in the same location, implicating the GPU.

If you can get to an Apple Store, they may be able to help you at a reduced cost. I think the straight motheboard replacement may list at about US$800. Ask them about "depot repair". For a flat fee, they send it out to a depot for something akin to refurbishment. Everything on the included laundry list will get taken care of (except cosmetics like simple scuffs) and it will be returned to you all fixed up, in a typical 3 to 5 days. If still available for your model, costs run about US$350 or so.

Have they checked for the TS4088 issue yet or is this not a mid 2010 model?  As you do also still have an Nvidia card my guess is that its the cause now to narrow down which part theres a program that could help.  Have you tried GFXcardstatus to see if it temporary fixes the issue by manually switching to the external?  If you still crash then the card itself is bad and if its not a mid 2010 then youll have to pay the 350 to get it repaired.  The program allows you to switch between cards but in my case isnt availible for windows which would solve my issue as mine crashes mostly when switching cards.

Harry, it's not been checked for TS4088 yet. It's a mid-2010 model :-(

I've tried using GFXCardStatus and it seems OK, when using the Internal card, so far as I can tell.

I've also tried forcing to hold the discrete card, but it still crashed with that one.

As I use an external screen it's not really an option to use the Internal card.

Well apparently I'm affected by this issue too... the latest panic log is below. Mid-2010 15 inch MacBook Pro, purchased August 2010. I had a couple of these panics under Snow Leopard as well, but they were so rare that I never considered taking it to the Apple Store for that. I suspected they might be related to a bad battery, and had that replaced a month ago, and had no more panics so assumed that was the fix.

Then two nights ago I upgraded to Mavericks. That's when things got REALLY bad. I've had 4 kernel panics since then. Can't do any serious work on this machine since I am likely to lose changes to files before I have a chance to save them... not to mention the risk of a corrupted file if it panics in the middle of a save while a write is pending.

Any chance this is something other than TS4088?

I will be making an appointment ASAP. From what I've read here, my chances of getting a free logic board are slim to none since I'm 3+ months beyond the 3 years and don't have an official record of specifically going to an Apple Store about the panics. I did let the system auto-report the earlier panics, but don't know if that counts for anything.

First thing I'd do is uninstall Sophos. I found any third party kernel extensions made the matter worse under Mavericks.

Now not all mid 2010 that have this panic are going to fail the test.  I am one of those cases I have the exact same issue as you all have described but passed the vst hardware test so apple wont do anythign unless I pay $350.
