Q: kernel panic, looks GPU related

I've been getting kernel panics over the last couple days. I think they are GPU related and seem to happen when I am changing from one window to another (ex switching from Mail to Chrome, or switching tabs on Chrome).

Here is the latest report:

Here is my latest panic.  This is with a new SSD. A mom and pop shop, whom APPLE reccomend I go to told me I had a bad hard drive and wanted to charge me 104.00 for diagnosis and 490.00 for a hard drive.  MAC SPECIALIST in VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. Ripoff in my opinion.  Long story short.  I took it to GENIUS who says a bad logic board.  I call Apple and they send me to a mom and pop shop.  At this point Im confused on why you would send me to a independent repair shop knowing i just came from the Apple store.  Okay, I can play the game as long as you fix your problem.  Apparently APPLE will not fix these issues.  Out of warrany. Oh well.  Lesson learned.  APPLE products are JUNK!  I also have a 2010 imac which is also having issues with the display.  The left corner is starting to blur. I bought a iphone 5s and within hours of purchase, I had to go back because it was stuck at the apple load screen.

    cae578-

Oh boy, looks like I'm in the same boat...

You are not in the TS4088 boat, because the chips with that Latent Defect did not find their way into any but the MacBook Pro 6,2, according to Apple. So I expect your test will say "PASSED".

Also, your kernel panic is just a regular old Page Fault, not a graphics issue at all. It occurred in routines called by launchd (the launch daemon).

You do not have any non-Apple kernel extensions, but boy do you have a lot of FireWire devices. If you have some Bus-powered-only drives in that collection, those would be my prime suspects. And if you are suspicious of your Hybrid drive, you probably have good reason to be so.

    shouldhave-

I expect Apple sent you to the NEAREST Apple-owned or Apple-Authorized facility, and used no other criteria whatsoever.

Yours is a graphics-related panic in a MacBook Pro 6,2. You should have a printed copy of TS4088 with you when you go to the Genius Bar. First they have to run the VST test and it shows FAILED, or you simply don't have this problem.

Independent shops have no latitude to authorize the repair out-of-standard dates for this program. Apple Stores have very little authority to authorize out-of-standard dates for this program. You have probably missed your window of opportunity under this program, unless you have a record of unsolved visits within the three-year window.

Returning to an older version of Mac OS X or using a utility that forces the use of Integrated graphics only makes the problem much less likely to occur.

Thanks.  I am out of warranty.  Genius says 310.00 to fix.  I just dont see spending the $$$. I also have a iMAC, bought in 2010 with display issues..Another waste of $$$.  I bought a iphone 5s a few weeks ago and the **** thing crashed on me within 4 hours.  I had to return it and get another one.  I just cant believe that QA at apple is that bad.

Thanks for the information, but now sad to hear it's not the issue described. All my firewire peripherals are individually powered. I've had the hybrid drive for awhile, and the reason why I related to other users here is because my issues only began with either Lion or Mountain Lion, which is why I didn't think it was the drive. Never had this restarting issue until then. At least nowhere near this frequency. I've also had restarts without the drives connected, so it's not those either. Two of them (2TB LaCie Raid and 2TB LaCie single drive) were connected via LaCie expresscard via eSATA. That stopped working with Mavericks, but I was having the issue beforehand and thought that might be the root of my problems too. Otherwise, I've thought some culprits might be Last.fm desktop client or BOINC.

I talked to an Apple rep online thru the instant mnessaging system on their website. After talking to him for awhile I was mentioning that I never get these kernel panics in Safe Mode.... and now he is certain that the problem is not in fact my GPU (which I got diagnosed at an Apple store already and was told it would be 322 dollars to fix, and he did acknowledge that it is indeed kernal panicing, the genius at the bar not the guy online..) since it does not restart on me in safe mode. However today I just found out that the GPU is friggin disabled in Safe Mode - therefore making it impossible to even receive a panic in this setting.

He now wants me to try a fresh install because he is certain it will work. I have my data backed up to an external HD.. I'm just worried that after I restore, will I be able to pull off my old iTunes folder and copy it over to the clean slate drive?

In Safe Mode, only a minimal set of kernel extensions are loaded. One that is not loaded is the Graphics chip Driver. So the CPU routines flip bits in the screen buffer and all the graphics chip does is show the buffer on the screen. I call that "simple mode" -- not a universal term but it gets the point across.

What do your kernel panics look like? go get one and post it here for Readers to interpret.

    GPU Panic: [<None>] 5 3 7f 0 0 0 0 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

That is a graphics problem, and you do not have third-party junk added on.

That looks a lot like the ones that get to the VST test and get "FAILED".

But the time is late, and they may not pay for the repair... However

If you can do some of these:

    • return to an older version of Mac OS X

    • run in integrated graphics only mode

The problem, if it is the one described in TS4088, is much less likley to occur.

My computer is just deemed useless at this point. In safe mode the laggy terrible fps makes it impossible to use. I'm in the process of talking to apple support as we speak.

i started to discover GPU Panics earlier this year. I also have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 6.2. When I went to a Genius desk they told me that it might be a problem with my RAM or the logic board and recommended to start testing with different RAM Chips.... well, i finally ended up with the logic board problem. The support manager here at Apple in Germany told me that they can't do anything as I am out of warranty. Well, he confirmed that there was a "replacement program" in place for 3 years....I asked him why he didn't inform me about it early enough as I discovered problems only until earlier this year. I spent 1.800 Euros and shall spend another 600 Euros for a HW problem known by Apple without telling me within the warranty period ? Well, he said that he understood my position but can't do anything for me....Thanks a bunch. Thats not how customers shaould be treated. Lets give MS a second chance.

My MBP has been doing it more and more recently. It's only ever done it since I've had Mavericks though. I'll have to speak to Apple and see what they can do, but I suspect the cost of repair is astronomical.

It's poor customer care for Apple to not repair a known fault when it didn't occur until after the 3 year claim period was passed.

I had hoped the Mavericks update (10.9.1) would've fixed it but it's just done it again.

I can't stick with Integrated graphics as I've got a second monitor. From what I've heard it only screws up when the graphics card switches, so I'll try sticking with the discrete card only to see if it's more stable.

Here's a list of all the panics I've had recently.

Does anyone know whether there is a software tool or software fix to prevent the switch of the graphics card ? I would accept less graphics performance and have a stable operating system instead.

    Tom_Off,

You can use gfxCardStatus to select which GPU you want to use and 'lock in' a given GPU.

    Good luck,

great stuff !! I'll try immediately. Interestingly, Apple does'nt even mention such bypass option....

    Thanks,
