Can I use gmail as default client for sharing photos from camera roll or links from safari?

I have that field, however the only thing listed in there is "yahoo" and no other option to change it to.

If you read the original post you would have seen that I have already tried this and it wouldn't allow me to do it, saying a gmail account was already set up. But there isn't one other than what I've already described in my original post.

Rock- I have google contacts set up as a CardDav account. Apparently I must have had google calendar set up using the standard ios gmail account setup for mail, while just turning the mail function to "off" in the settings. This was why I could not add a gmail account...I already had done this lol.

I tried a couple of things and still couldn't figure it out. I can't add an ics subscribed calendar for some reason as it isn't enable to authenticate. Nor can I set up a simple CalDav calendar, despite my settings being correct, it wasn't able to successfully authenticate either. Or maybe it was "verify" and not "authenicate"...at any rate I coudln't do it.

Maybe I am explaining what I want to do incorrectly. I'll try again, though it is probably as clear as mud lol.

I want my google contacts and my calendar. If iOS handles this for me I am totally ok with that. I want my Gmail app, which handles the bulk, or essentially all of my mail for me, labels etc, and I use it all the time...which of course I am ok with as well.

I want the native iOS mail app to handle my yahoo account, which sees little to no email transaction from me. It does this well right now, as its pretty much only a seasonal account....meaning when it is fantasy football season, it comes into play.

I want the native iOS mail app to handle any photos or links I send from the phone to give my gmail account address in the "From" part of the header....even if it sends it from yahoo's servers. Preferably I would like it to come from gmails servers but I know I can't have my cake and eat it too.

The reason for all this is if I send someone a photo I want them to respond to my gmail not my yahoo account. I tried setting up the gmail account using the native iOS gmail account setup, but what happens is that I end up with my incoming gmail in two spots on the phone, which I don't want.

If I could turn off incoming gmail using the native iOS account setup, this would solve the issues. I would then be able to designate the native Gmail account as primary (for use as a send only account), and still keep the yahoo inbox going as well.

Even if I went to extremes and paid money so I could forward my yahoo mail to my gmail account, thereby allowing my to remove yahoo completely from the phone, I would just be left with no option to send emails as there would be no default account available (as my gmail is handled by the app, not the phone).

That last part I tried, and I would like to say thank you for discussing with me. I still haven't quite got it figured out yet. The last part works, but not for everyone. For instance, if I set up send only as gmail through the yahoo app, it will show up correctly if I send to myself. If I send to a co-worker work email address it disappears into thin air....ie never shows up.

If I set up yahoo for a reply to address of @gmail.com, it does that correctly, however the person receiving mail still sees yahoo as the originating account.

I was thinking of setting up an icloud mail account and seeing of some setting through there might work but frankly I am trying to converge all email into my one gmail account, the thought of yet another email account bugs me.

And just so you think I'm not all crazy, my reasoning for not wanting to just park the mail app on the screen somewhere out of the way is two fold. First, it controls my yahoo mail. I don't want to change that. Second, if I turn on gmail natively and turn off indicators I am still looking at all my mail showing up in two spots, as well as all of my labels appearing underneath, which leaves a messy looking hard to navigate native mail app.

The only solution I've found is manually adding via imap, but putting a dot or dash in the in the incoming imap server box. But with this, everytime I open the mail app it yells at me that it can't find the server.

I think the best way would have been sending as gmail through yahoo. However if I want to email a picture to my work email account, it doesn't resolve it for some reason. Irritating to say the least lol.

Ok, it took me all day pretty much but I finally figured it out! There should probably be a more elegant way of doing it and who knows what iOS 7 will bring (or break) but here goes.

What I had to do was add yahoo mail as an imap account and populate the incoming server fields with my yahoo information:

Host Name: imap.mail.yahoo.com

User Name: <username>@yahoo.com

Password: ********

Then for outgoing server information I used my gmail settings:

Host Name: smtp.gmail.com

User Name: <username>@gmail.com <--------Putting the "@gmail.com" seemed important because it was not happy the first time I did it with just my username.

Password: ******** <----password for gmail account here I think is self explanatory.

So what does this allow me to do? Well for one, yahoo incoming email is push, so thats good. And I only have one "email" address being handled by the native iOS mail app, which is yahoo (well I only "see" the yahoo stuff in my mail app anyways). But the true benefit and really what I was looking for is now, if I email a link from safari or email a photo using the "share" button and mail app, it sends it as originating from my gmail account. This is important to me because that is really the only account I respond from anyways. I still need to see the incoming emails from yahoo on occasion, but I don't email back and forth with yahoo. So this simplifies things a bit.

I'm still working on how to address where the sent email shows up. I just looked and it seemed to be staying only on the phone in a seperate sent box so I had "2" sent boxes, and I couldn't find it on gmail or yahoo. However when i changed the advanced settings, and looked again on gmail it was there, and then again on yahoo there as well, so two different spots. Still haven't figured out how to keep it in only one spot, but I can live with this for now. 🙂
