alias desktop folder icon lower resolution than original

User uploaded fileWhen I create an alias to a desktop folder its icon is of lower resolution than original.

Even when I copy and paste from the respective get infos I get the same result. Any ideas?

Try running this program. It will show 3rd party applications that might be causing the problem.

Etrecheck – System Information

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Etrecheck did not notice anything. A new user account seems ok. I looked at the resources in CoreTypes.bundle and the corresponding folder icons are fine.

So:

why are some folder icons fine and other are fuzzy?

It doesn't matter if it is an alias or not.

Sometimes newly downloaded applications are fuzzy.

copying a good folder icon to a fuzzy folder icon in get info does not fix the problem.

Is there a way to force the os to reinstall the foldericons for all folder? Deleteing com.apple.finder.plist sometimes helps sometimes not.Reinstalling the os over the existing os does not help even if you delete coretypes.bundle befor reinstalling.

I think you people are getting a bit unfriendly and unfair. How do you expect to learn from fixing these types of problems? So we should never use third party apps? The computer is a hobby for me as well as a workhorse.

So lets review what I have done.

Reinstalled Mac OS.

Removed all login items

deleted com.apple.finder.plist

rebuilt the launch services data base

deleted the .ds restore files

repaired permissions

Cleared out all startup items folders.

Zapped the PRAM.

I have multiple hd on my Mac Pro. HD1 is the one with the problems.

I did a clean install of 10.8.4 on another HD called HD2.

I copied over the System extensions folder and the coretypes.bundle folder from HD2 to HD1. Restarted and things look fine. However as soon as I create a new alias or logout and login the problem reappears.

What does work is:

Using a different user account.

Booting in safe mode.

No-one is being unfair, I am telling you the proper way of fixing the mess. If you don't want to then you are the one being unfair to yourself. And please remember that you voluntarily made this mess.

You've been futzing with this for a month, how much more time are you willing to invest.

Sure Fire Fix Available Here.

Erase your drive and reinstall.

I have over 500 apps installed including utilities. If I use migration assistant woun't I just be copying problems over to the clean install drive?

Probably, that is why I did not suggest using it.

Is there anyone out there who truly understands how OS X works when creating and using folder icons? I want to minimise problems in the future, but, at the same time, try new software.

Ask the vendor of the hack for help in returning OSX to how it was before their software borked it.
