Are .dmg files necessary to keep after a download?

I have several .dmg files in my downloads folder. I do not want to remove the applications installed. But is it necessary to keep the .dmg files in the downloads folder or can I go ahead and delete them?

MacBook, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

It is not necessary to keep them. The DMGs are just packages for the installation files, and can be discarded without affecting the system; however, before doing so be sure the DMGs are readily available if you need them again (ie, from the developer). Most are, but in some cases developers may give you a one-time download, etc.

DMGs provide a convenient way to, among other things, ensure distributed programs are not corrupted when transferred to your system.
