Sennheiser MM-550 X headphones crakling when playing music

The music keeps breaking up. The bluetooth range seems to be very bad. If the phone is out of it's cover and only six inches from the headphones, then it's OK. I tried resetting the iPhone and the headphones. A real pain.

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3, Leather cover.
