New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,


Hope someone can help?


I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.


This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?


Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Agree. I wonder how many of these issues would go away if the router or wireless AP was switched to an Apple branded one. A good test is to do what I suggested earlier and switch from WPA/WPA2 authentication to WEP (or Open). If WEP or Open causes the problems to disappear then the WPA/WPA2 features of the router are likely incompatible with the Macbook. This is what happened to me anyway.

i wonder why i did not think about open the router, but i guess is was not an option for me to leave my network open 😝 hehehe but yeah, i do believe it, because now that i give a thought about it, i never had a issue with verizon fios router or the new link sys e2500. i used to have the Belkin which they stated is Mac compatible at the end, i guess is not. Just save yourself the hassle and give it a try. The worse it could happen is that the old router ended up as a access point device 😝

I have a MacBook Air and an Apple Extreme router.

SAME PROBLEM. Drops WiFi frequently


Maybe I should ask the there question: Wonder how many of these problems would go away if I ditched the Apple router?

Odd that your apple router is not working with your MacBook. I have not had any problems with my Apple routers. However, one base station router in particular was giving me lots of problems.


Yosemite improved the dropout issue slightly, but I finally got the IT support department to look at the router in question. They updated the firmware to the latest version (DD-WRT) and the problem has finally gone away (from my workplace). This does not help people who cannot update their routers or replace them and I don't know why that particular router hated my MacBook Air.


If you are having problems try to update firmware or do a hard reset of your router to see if that fixes the problem...that's about all I can offer as a suggestion.

I have had the same problem with Yosemite on my Mac Air, my iPhone 5s since the update and I just got my iPad Air 2 and it has the same problem. My iPad Air was fine until the update and now it drops as well. I just got a new router, same problem. My other laptop does not have that problem, its Windows. Really frustrated because I had no issues prior to upgrading the iOS

When your wifi connectivity is active , run the Wireless Diagnostics and monitor the WIFI.


Unzip the report and look at the file wifi-5gUAEy.log. 5gUAEy name is specific to that particular diagnostics report.


In the wifi-xxxxxx.log , check for the text "Will not continue auto join". If the below issue exists in your report follow the steps

to fix the issue.

<airportd[29]> airportdProcessSystemConfigurationEvent: Processing 'Setup:/Network/Interface/en0/AirPort'

AutoJoin: <airportd[29]> AUTO-JOIN triggered (Network Service Changed)

AutoJoin: <airportd[29]> user: <yourusername>

<airportd[29]> WiFi interface is OFF, will not continue auto-join


1). Open the terminal and Go to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

2). Ensure your user has the appropriate rights to access the airport utility and network related files .

3). Provide appropriate permissions to the files and your problem will get resolved.


I had the same problem and tried all the resolutions given in almost all of the forums , but nothing worked.Above fix resolved my problem now, Good luck.

My Airport Extreme has this problem since I installed Yosemite and I have tried virtually every fix in this thread and from other forums. Ditto the bug fixes. So buying more Apple products is not a fix and not recommended by me.


Genius Bar techs are helpless because they can't duplicate the problem.


This is not the first time Apple has had WiFi problems on upgrades but it is surely the worst.


At the time of this writing, now months after the release, I find it a bit incredible I and other users are still struggling with it, but I can say this to Apple if they are listening:


1. Long time users are very dissatisfied and losing faith in your ability.

2. Please get some fresh blood in your SW team, you need people with a better understanding of WiFi and Bluetooth because this is getting old.

3. I will never buy or recommend an Apple wireless hub again because they are overpriced, laggard technology and no guarantee of compatibility.

4. I'd like to say I will never buy another Apple PC again but my investment in multiple PCs and software is so great already I have no choice but to continue, but do so as an unhappy customer.

5. I curse your existence every time I have to debug and reset what should be a reliable and automatic service, which wastes my time not yours. This makes me also a resentful customer, which is just about the worst kind to have.


Anyone else reading that has a new proposed fix, thanks for positing it, I will try anything. We are on our own here. Apple is clearly no help.

Has 10.10.2 fixed anyone's issues? I no longer have the ability to replicate my connectivity issue since I updated the firmware on my Dlink router (later version of DD-WRT fixed that particular issue).


Apparently Slashdot and ITworld have articles covering wifi issues and Macs with Yosemite, so it looks like Apple is aware of some of the problems.

hey all am new to the forum


But again - i upgraded to 8.4 on my ipad and iphone 6 and since then when connecting to my home wi-fi - its soooo slow and very often unresponsive.


So i went into my router settings and changed the security from what i originally have: Mixed WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK Security to be WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key).


As a result i do see that my wifi for my apple products improves but my work Laptop doesnt connect to wifi at all as it doesnt like this form of Authentication and Encryption Methodd.


So do we just sit tight ??????

The days of Plug and Play are long gone.


I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. After upgrading to 10.8.5 it will not connect to WiFi services that require a login page such as Tim Horton's Macdonalds and Starbucks. THIS ***** ! - I am on the road all the time and need this functionality. It connects to the WiFi signal but will not load the log-in page. I've tried Safari, Chrome and Firefox and the browser makes no difference, I just get a blank page and spinning wheel of death in Safari or error messages in the others.My old Macbook running Leopard connected without problems. Of course all the other mounting problems with other issues with that old hardware & software necessitated that I get a new Laptop which just brought new and different problems.


My Wife's iPhone 5 has never been able to log-onto a WiFi service anywhere other than at our home where we use the gruesome Rogers, whose service is as terrible as Bell and Telus. We've taken it to the "Genius " bar numerous times where they can get it to connect to the Apple Store Wifi, but when we leave their store it stops working again. Pointless.


Of course my iPhone was stolen and Apple can't track it for whatever reason. Out $700.


I miss the old plug and play Macs prior to system 10. Those machines were indestructible, easy to DIY fix, and plug and play. everything worked. Now Apple looks good and has no substance.
