New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,

Hope someone can help?

I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.

This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?

Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Thanks heaps!

Vicky

You understood correctly at least for my case

It appears that I am still connected to the wifi but really I am not ... I cant even get to the router which is a WRT160N latest firmware .. 3.0.03

I tried lower the MTU to 1473 per osxdaily article but that didnt help

talking to tech support now

maybe your router will be compatible ???

Adding my voice to the list. Just bought a new 11" 1.3Ghz i5 in a 8/512 config and the new AirPort Extreme Base Station. Wi-Fi drops periodically, every hour or so, and stays off through restarts or toggling Wi-Fi on/off or switching to an older router.

Apple is aware that they have a *major* issue on their hands and there's a lot of overtime being worked right now on this one issue. Hopefully it's fixable through firmware. I'd expect an update within a week, hopefully much sooner.

Good luck to us all.

Hi guys,

I am experiencing this problem as well. I can get online in Uni and my friend's house quite well, but can not at home. I see wifi at Uni & friend's house is WPA2, my house WPA. So i think that may be one of the problems. I will try to change my house's router into WPA2 to see what gonna happen. My solution right now is that I am using my iphone as a wifi router through software "Mywi" which can be downloaded from Cydia (Jailbeaken Iphone). It's working quite nice till now. let's try that way to see if it's helpful guys, at least in the time waiting for Apple's response.

Gud luck!

Update:

I had posted in the beginning that a reformat solved the problem. It didn't. I later posted that changing the firmware on my Asus RT-N16 router from DD-WRT to Tomato solved the problem. Well, it didn't. It seems to merely make it happen less often. Anytime I try to do a time machine backup over the network, or transfer any large file, then the network traffic stops working. All local network drives stop connecting, internet doesn't work, can't ping other devices. Just as before, every other device on the network (2007 Macbook Pro, 2011 Macbook Pro, iPad Mini, iPhone 4S, 2011 Mac Mini) continues to work flawlessly. For everyone's information, I'm running an Asus RT-N16 router with Tomato version 1.28 (Shibby build) with WPA / WPA2 Personal + AES.

I paid $1800 for a computer that can't even transfer a 1GB file over a network without crashing. I'm returning this piece of junk. It's quite clear that no one even bothered to test the computer before they shipped it worldwide.

the problems dont exist in the routers or base stations. I have a new Mac Air 2013

works perfect on the new Extreme, and works anywhere hotspot thru/to the iphone.

The problem ALSO is certainly NOT the reported antenna wifi placement in the hinge as reported "losing signals when placed on a table/metal table. This has already been disproved.

The only 2 deductive possibilities as Apple likely already concluded is bad handshaking between the 802ac and the Mountain Lion OS

or #2. firmware 802ac wifi protocols which are booting connection.

The possibility of this being hardware sourced are next to nill, both logically and as evidenced by process elimination.

ERGO, 1 of 2 things.... OS update to handshake better with next-breed 802ac wifi ......or wifi firmware protocols shunting priority to connectivity rather than optimized speed defaults when using stone age wifi in timbuktu coffee shops etc etc.

until an update is issued, which I bet will be within a week or so, if you are on the go, hotspot your IPHONE with your new Mac Air

from all examination, Ive seen NOBODY reporting a problem getting connected or having wifi-booting problems thru their Iphone hotspot. 🙂

Love my macbook air, much nicer / faster/ runs cooler/ writes faster than my old 2011 Air. 😍
