New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,

Hope someone can help?

I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.

This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?

Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Thanks heaps!

Vicky

Launch the tool when you are not connected to the network and it should prompt you for next steps. I tried it out and it tells you to attempt to connect to the network and if it fails, proceed and collect logs by hitting Continue.

Just turn WiFi on and then try this. Don't turn WiFi off as thats probbaly why you are seeing the warning that tells you turn WiFI On.

This should save some logs that you can hand off to AppleCare when you call them. If you'd like, upload the file it saves on the Desktop someplace and send me the link and I can take a look and see if I can help. ( or paste the link here and I can take a look )

Ok, I tried installing over the top first, doing a reboot and Command-Option-R

It took about an hour, so far, I haven't had an issue (in 5 minutes) and it downloaded the entire image without a problem.

This installed over the top, so all of my accounts and data is still here.

I hope it continues, if it doesn't, I will try a format/install.

Okay, 2 days in after complete hard drive format and Internet recovery and its still doing fine. gmc74, if I understand you correctly, you used the recovery disk (not complete Internet recovery from scratch) and reinstalled the OS over the existing OS and it didn't resolve the issue? If that's the case then it looks like the only known solution is a complete format I outlined in a previous post. Perhaps it's possible that you can simply replace the driver manually and correct the problem, but I wouldn't know how to do it.

Originally I did an internet recovery over the top of my existing install, and it didn't work.

Last night I reformatted the drive an installed the OS from the internet again. Immediately upon opening Safari after the entire install and configuration, I had the same issue again.

I will be calling apple today and most likely returning this mac today as well. Too much work for a $2000 computer.

I too got a shiny new haswell 13" and have had the same issues.. In reading the posts here, I tried a few things. I have re-installed the OS from scratch, no luck. I have upgraded the firmware on my router...thought I was golden, worked great for 10 min.. then reverted to same issue. I changed channels 11 to 1 to 9. I finally called support who suggested each step above and had me re-do a couple (maybe thought I was just saying i'd done and hand't really done) and nothing worked. My router is 2.4 only so I couldn't switch over to 5ghz like he suggested. I did try my air at the mall where apple is and I didn't have the same hangups. Naturally it means it is something in my environment or a setting/file on the air that isnt' playing well or something... but the macbook pro that I just sold, my wife's 13' air (2011) and our houseold ipads (3) iphones (2) and ipods (2) all work flawlessly. Also an HP all in one that is on wifi.

I've printed a bunch of other suggestions from this thread off and i"ll go home tonight and try.. I agreee that for $2K I shouldn't have to go through all this, but I'd rather get is straight than go back to apple and have a genius tell me since it works fine on their network it is my network issue etc.. .luckily, i just bought locally and I have the recepit so I can return and re-buy and see if something changes.

I'm inclined to think it is some stupid snafu and that one of these tweaks and another call to apple and maybe I can work it out. This is just the type of thing I've avoided for the last 8 years or so by leaving PC for Apple, so while I'm frustrated, it's the first time in a long time so I'm going to keep at it... I'll check back to see if anyone else has resolved it another way and I'll post update if I figure anything out...

Hello Guru

I did run a "diagnostics" with connection in place just to see what it does. Since I did that I've been back a few times doing things on the MBA but apparenly not long enough to let it fail. When it fails again (I can't belief that runing diagnostics would be the cure) I'll run another diagnostics and take both results to a Genius to interpret. Thanks for your guidance & patience.
