Q: New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,

Hope someone can help?

I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.

This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?

Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Thanks heaps!

Vicky

10.9.2 beta 4 is out (13c48) Doesn't appear to note any changes to the driver but I did the update and things look OK so far, better than before. Turned on power nap and stopped the continous pings to test but it seems to be more stable than before. Time will tell if Apple has gotten to the root of the problem.

any idea when the 10.9.2 will be ready to install? I have a user at work who just bought a macbook air last night from the apple store, and having issues connecting to our wifi here at work. she can connect just intermiddently to a virgin movile hotspot. I ensure it had nothing to do with my AP. is sys pref/network; it shows she is connected, has an ip address, but when opening a webpage it never loads.

If she can return it then I suggest she do so. I got mine a few weeks ago and currently running a 3 year old MacBook Pro side by side literally. The Air connects some of the time but slow and quirky. For example if I have two windows open then one will stall unless I close the other one but after I have rebooted the wifi because it will cut out, whereas the Pro works flawlessly. Anyway have had it for 3 weeks now and will file a claim with American Express today to return it otherwise I am hit with a heavy restocking fee thank you apple shop. I have been a loyal Apple user for 20 years but I bought this thing for work and if I don't work then I can't pay for anymore Apple toys in the future.  Every company makes a lemon now and then so I will be an Apple apologist this once but I am moving on. I am shopping for a new laptop for my son today and I am taking his old MacBook Pro.

Is this even physically possible to have "some" connection and speed with unpluged connectors?

There was another layer of "wireless connection" between the chip and the antena?

    >>always having signal but the speed was like using on a bad conenction ...

    >>Opened it and saw one of the connectors unpluged

This 10.9.2 promise is just prolonging my suffering.

Should I wait? Should I try to find the driver manually? Should I switch?

Right now I am waisting my time at important meetings with cursing at my MBA.

There are people who had hardware issues which got fixed by swapping the macbook. For few the new beta driver fixed the problem. You could always buy it, try it for 2 weeks and return it if you face problems.

    Hello svhost

You can return it, no problem. I bought a fully customised MacBook Air but they sent me a 13" when I wanted 11". I returned it (they picked it up) and the money was refunded. They were very good.

Yes tonywong mine is the same. Much, much better since I loaded the beta driver but every now and again it drops out. I open the 'system preferences/network', click on assist me, then on diagnostics. It usually comes up with 'Wi-fi', 'Wi-fi settings', 'Network settings' and 'ISP' all showing green but the 'Internet' and 'Server' showing yellow. I don't do anything and after only a moment the 'Internet' and 'Server' turn green and I am connected.

If I don't open the diagnostics it won't reconnect.

Obviously some minor hiccup somewhere. But this is nothing compared with the problems I used to have before the beta driver. Thanks again Headcase et al.

Other than this the connection is now generally better than my MacBook Air late 2010.

I just saw the 'MBA refuses to connect to certain wireless routers' issue today. Until now I have had no issue connecting my 13 inch 2013 mba to any wireless routers.

But today I was at a friends house briefly, and my MBA just refused to connect to his wireless router. It would see the network, I click connect, it starts connecting, and then... I get the exclamation mark on the airport icon and my wifi gets a self assigned ip address, no working connection. I took out my samsung galaxy s2 phone and connected to the same network with zero problems. and his phone and PS3 connected to it fine as well. Tried rebooting the MBA and trying again, no luck.

Unfortunately I'm not sure what kind of router he had, it was in an inaccessible spot, but he said it's a fairly new one he had gotten from best buy.

When I got home my MBA of course connected to my netgear wndr4300 with no issues :/

I've had a problem similar to that before with a WNDR3700 / 3800.  The router would decide that it didn't want to allow any new connections to that radio.  Even rebooting the router wasn't fixing it.  I would have to actually go into the router firmware and turn the radio off, then reboot, then turn the radio back on.

I"ve had radio problems with Android phones before (like no 4G) where rebooting the phone wouldn't fix it, I would actually have to go into the settings and kill the radio, reboot, and then turn the radio back on.

So in summary, what you described isn't necessarily a Macbook Air problem.

Either the new IO80211Family.kext or the associate reboot solved all my connectivity problems.

    Time will tell which one.

I didn't connect my android phone to it until after I had attempted to connect the MBA (after the MBA failed to connect, I pulled out the phone and tried and it connected fine), and the android phone connected fine, so I don't think it was an issue with the radio not accepting any new connections.
