Q: New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,

Hope someone can help?

I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.

This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?

Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Thanks heaps!

Vicky

I have the same Log for my wifi (only the attributes that should be different have other values). I don't experience any difficulties with my connection at all, but i have only tried two modems from Cisco and one "public network". I have mac air 11 i7 8GB 256. Unfortunatelly, i doesn't mean that my air is OK ...

I have the new MBA 13" and was able to resolve my wifi connection issues by going into system preferences then clicking on Network. Once the Network window opens select your wifi connection on the left hand side of the window. At the top of the Network window next to Location: there is a drop down that says Automatic. Click the drop down and select Edit Locations. Click the + to add a new location and name it (I called mine Home) and click Done. Click the Apply button in the lower right hand corner of the Network window and restart your computer.

I did eventually see a drop on my newer accesspoint (DIR-628), can't say for sure why.  It may have just been trying to jump back to the other AP.

I did see a couple more crashes.

Last night I finished up with it, closed the lid, put it on charge.

This morning simply unplugged the power and took it to my work desk.  I opened it up around 1hr later to find that the screen wouldn't come on... looking closer I could see my login icon/password field on the display, just no backlight to illuminate it.  It was locked up, as typing didn't add any characters to the password field.

The part that was bit bothersome is that while it was locked up, it was burning up battery power.  The bottom of the MBA was warm (while sitting on a cool desktop).  I plugged it in, on change.  Had to hold down power to get it to turn off, then restart.  Upon restarting the battery was at 75% (remember I only pulled it off charge and put it on my desk, should have been 100%).

Have a genius appt today.  I was okay with waiting for a 'presumably' software/firmware fix to the wifi issue.  But these lockups and hangs have me pretty bothered.

Try switching the networks security to WPA2 Personal on your router. Seen a few folks say that helps them.

Just returned mine. I loved the battery life and the portability (coming from a 15" pro) but,  I was coming up on 14 days and didn't want to be stuck with it if there's no fix. Maybe if apple releases a fix soon i'll buy another one.

That might be wise (return unit and wait until this is resolved).  I'm just unboxing my 2nd MBA in 3 days.  Knock on wood, this one doesn't have WiFi issues and kernel panics like my last one.

OK, but this really looks like there are damaged units (HW, SW), not general problem. If the environment is around your mac air stable and only air is changed...

If your air is working fine at home but only has issues with other public wifi it cant be a harware issue

A software /firmware fix is needed to make these Airs AS backwards compatible with junk public wifi AS last gen macbook Airs

the entire definition of the Air isnt that of a homebody lapdog computer but a go everywhere traveler and that this New Air has an agoraphobia complex with junk wifi is the BIG issue someone dropped the ball on

Im getting info from several that unless the point is pressed that Apple is NOT "collecting" the problem Airs anymore .... meaning theyre certain as to the fix and seemingly a patch in OSX or firmware is in the pipe for solving this very near term

Actually, my air is working fine with public wifi too. I have not experienced any wifi issues so far. Now, i am trying to test different routers, wifis and so on to be sure it really works fine anywhere...

Hi. I'm a new Mac user, I bought two weeks ago the MBA from the web site and it came two days ago at home: I live away for studying so I haven't been able to see it yet, but I've been reading this 3d and some news on the web. I was wondering: what should I try to do with it to be sure it's fine? I mean, a drop of connection could be the signal to get a Genius Appointment? Should I wait for an eventual software fix? Thanks in Advance.

    Hi again

I've now used my new MBA for three days and it now needs a charge soon - down to 13%.

I have used it extensively at home, away from home on open and secure WiFi and via two different smartphone 'hot spots'.

No drop outs at all, none.

The only explanation I have is that it is a custom build in China bought online for UK delivery....

Still, many others posting here have custom builds and are getting WiFi drop outs.

How has the second Macbook Air been? Does it seem like the issue has been resolved at all? I'm wondering cause I need to know if I can expect only one turn in or if it'll be a repeating thing with these models.
