Q: New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,

Hope someone can help?

I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.

This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?

Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Thanks heaps!

Vicky

Hold your horses, pal. It may be Greek to you, but it isn't exactly rocket science.

Besides, you seem to misunderstand the meaning of the word "theory" when used within sciences. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/theory?r=75&src=ref&ch=dic

I know this is an online forum, but it would make this much more useful for us if all the snarky trolly condescending BS pro and con Apple and whatever else were just left out. This isn't a hobby, this a solvable problem for a machine that most of us need to work or learn. There are problems, everyone is trying to resolve them, let's do that. Please don't even respond to this, it just muddles this thread.

I previously mentioned I had bought two of the 2013 MacBook Air 11's, and have lucklily had no connectivity problems. I'm far from a software/hardware expert, but I'd like to add to my previous post....

My wife and I travel the world (airline industry) and have connected to our (Airport Extreme 4th Gen) home base station in addition to several European hotels & airport WiFi networks without issue. I just can't believe we've been so lucky to not encounter a network not properly set up for today's modern WiFi enabled computing devices.

So I'm just throwing this out there..... a USA based user travelling the USA & Europe with 2 MBA11's and not having a connectivity issue with 2 plus weeks of ownership....

BTW - sending this from a Novotel Hotel in Brussels....

Is there a link or something from where one can download the update, that is if it is an update?

there is no link... an email comes with a registration code to get the software. I'm guessing they are only trying it with folks they are in contact with and getting diagnostics from.

The 'fix' worked for most of last night, but then it hung.. i was able to turn wifi off and back on and it worked for a while longer. So it wasn't a real fix afterall. I still have yet to have any problem with the MBA on any other network, and I still have yet to have problems on my network with any other device. Also, the second network I set up with the extreme on 5Ghz is working flawlessly.

I am having the same problem, drops out after 1 min. Very keen for this update as setting up the Mac with no internet is very difficult. Lets hope Apple get things into gear sharpish!

Yes, the wifi works fine with phone tethering hotspot, but crashes often with regular wifi.

Hi Doug, were you informed by Apple that they're coming up with a fix (firmware update) or you're speculating based on your past experience? Also, did you inform Apple Support about the issue and did they acknowledge it?

I'm connected to Apple Airport Extreme and having the issue. This is my 2nd MacBook Air 2013 13" i7 8 GB 512 Drive. It's also happening at the Apple Store while connected to their WiFi.

I've been reviewing the posts on here and so far I'm seeing that only i7s are affected. Can anyone else confirm that this intermittent Internet connectivity issue is also happening to MacBook Air with i5?

not sure how you come to the conclusion that only i7 are affected.

I'm on my second i5 MBA with this issue.
