Q: New Macbook Air - wifi connectivity problems

Hey guys,

Hope someone can help?

I have a brand new Macbook Air which is able to connect to the internet for just a minute or two before suddenly it drops out. This is even though the signal still shows at full strength and all my other devices are still able to surf the net as per normal.

This device is straight out of the box so no 3rd party applications have been installed. I heard that the wifi has been upgraded to 802.11n on this machine, could that be an issue?

Do i need to return the machine or is there is a software fix for this problem?

Thanks heaps!

Vicky

Interestingly, I have a new 13" MBA purchased on June 29, but when I try to run the update I get the following message:

    Alert

This software is not supported on your system.

hmm, it dropped and re-connect without my notice with WPA-TKIP.

after I set up 2 extra routers with WPA-TKIP for this official update.

I ran the wifi connectivity and it did indicate the episode - that's how I learn it.

I will try YouTube to see how it runs against large files.

    stay tune

MacBook Air (Mid 2013) Software Update 1.0: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1672

This update fixes an issue that in rare instances may cause an intermittent loss in wireless connectivity, an issue with Adobe Photoshop which may cause occasional screen flickering, and an issue which may cause audio volume to fluctuate during video playback.

Downloading the update now; and will report my results. I'm So Excite! (à la Borat)

    Before the "update"

WAP-TKIP would only connect for "less than 1 minute" - sometimes, not at all

WAP2-AES - did not have any drop over hours

    After the update

WAP-TKIP would drop every 1-2 minutes (via wireless monitor) - but the web experience is un-noticable of any "drop" issues

WAP2-AES would drop every 1-2 minutes (via wireless monitor) - again, can NOT tell from web surfing, YouTube watching.

I think it is only partial fix - at least it will make "surfing" the web without "screaming" out of lungs.

But, it sacrafice the Pre-update's WAP2-AES performance.

    Hardware:

    mid MBA 13" i5, 256G, 8G memory

    routers: Netgear N300 (v.2) with WAP2-AES and Netgear N300 with WAP-TKIP

I'm extremely saddened! After the update, the issue seems to have gotten worse -- now it's disconnecting every 20-30 seconds as opposed to 2-5 minutes.

I will delete the profiles, preferences, etc. and see what happens, before I jump into any conclusions.

Even with the patch, I'm still having issues.

@Endy97 Yes, before I was getting disconencted between 2-5 minutes, and at times even 10-20 minutes. Now with this update/fix it's disconnecting more frequently, less than a minute.

I just got the MacBook Air two days ago and was able to connect wirelessly for a couple hours and then it stopped.  Only way I can use it online is to plug in the dongle from my daughters WII.  I just applied the update for the WIFI issue and now it is worse.  i can't get the WIFI to stay on.  The top icon shows it is cycling on, an arrow shows, and then it goes back off.  Any ideas or do I need to go back to Apple and return it?

Just FYI: Prior to the just-released update, my main router was stable and remains stable after the update. (AirPort Extreme 5th-gen, 5GHz 802.11n WPA2).  So nothing has degraded at least.

Have not tested the new fix with my other routers that had dropouts to see if their issues are resolved yet.

I can't install the update. Running mavericks, but that shouldn't be the issue. Any help?
