.component files shown as simple folders

I've seen an other ticket like that, but it was left for dead back in 2008.

Today I tried to use an old USB webcam and installed a couple app adding some .component files in the /library/QuickTime folder.

Now, every .component file that's added in there, or that I find in an installation pkg, is shown as a regular folder. I have direct acces to its content.

I have the feeling that this prevent the application from using it as it should...

Anybody with a solution to turn them back to actual component files?

(I have tried to remove and put the extension back. The finder asks me for a confirmation to add the ".component" extension, but it doesn't change a thing..)

Thank you!

I'd agree with you if:

- Initially I was not seeing the very same ".coponent" file as a coponent file indeed

- The same thing happen with many different ".copononent" file, actually all of the "new ones", since the files initially present in /library/quicktime did not change.

- Renaming the folder to name.plugin actually enables it. (And the program works then)

I don't understand what happened that causes every new .coponent file to be considered as simple folders, and thus, not active (at least in that case).

So, the first one that "caused" the issue (I don't know the exact cause, maybe it's a bad manipulation from me) was the software mycam : http://sourceforge.net/projects/webcam-osx/

There's an app that's not very usefull, and a .component file to place in the quicktime folder so that old usb webcam can be recognized by the system.

After that, I also had the same issu with the .component file of the app camtwist : http://camtwiststudio.com/download/

Then there was at least one other, but I tried so many that I don't quite remember which one also put a .component file in the same folder. Maybe this one: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iusbcam/

Anyhow, what's odd is that I see the .component file as a folder even in the .dmg archive of the software I donwload. But on the other hand, the .component files already present in this /library/quicktime folder are fine (i.e. Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component)
