Don't bother.

Your machine is 7 years old and past it's expected end of life, so you got good mileage out of it and likely will get more if you remain just like you are on 10.6.8.

10.7./10.8 is a more feature rich operating system better for Early 2011 Mac's and later (even better with a SSD) with more powerful grapics and processors.

If you want the new OS X, buy a new machine with Maverick coming out in a few months or so, we don't know exactly but Apple said this fall.

10.7/10.8 won't run your PPC based programs, require you to buy all new ones or paid upgrades + more RAM etc., and still be slow.

So enjoy that machine a bit longer and plan on buying a new one with 10.9 this fall is my advice. 🙂

Unless your MacBook Pro will already boot in 64 bit mode, it cannot run 10.8, although you should be able to run 10.7. However 10.7 has many disadvantages compared to 10.6 and not many advantages compared to 10.8--it really wouldn't be worth the trouble. Unless there is something you need to do that is not available to you now just keep on truckin' with what you've got. You would be better off to buy a new machine running Mountain Lion if you can't do what you want with what you've got.
